GWP blogspot

This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Powered by air

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I am a sucker for a cool gadget. This one will be particularly interesting to colleagues working in the media. I would have loved to have access to this while working at The Advocate.

For some reason (known only by the boffins at the major camera manufacturers) a lot of the high end DSLR cameras don't come equipped with WiFi. In these days of news immediacy this is a bit problematic. There are workarounds, but they tend to be unwieldy, cumbersome, expensive, or all three.

This is the Case Air by Tether Tools. It retails in Australia for around $265 and lets me connect wirelessly to any WiFi enabled device...my iphone, Macbook, android tablet etc. I can take a shot with my Canon 5D MkIII (which has no WiFi) and within seconds have it on my phone to send anywhere (as long as I have a phone signal). The shot below was taken with my Canon 7DMkII (with Case Air attached) and posted on facebook almost simultaneously. A change of connection cable is all that is needed to make the Case Air compatible with other camera bodies. So if you are a multiple brand shooter you don't need multiple Case Air units.

The Case Air also supports the transfer of Raw files ... something that can be an issue with other systems.

It's as easy as switching on your camera and the Case Air, connecting your WiFi device via the settings menu and opening the app. Shots you take appear as thumbnails (you can pinch zoom to check focus) ... select the image you wish to use and export/download it to your device. You can now edit it with your fave software and send it to the world.

The Case Air sits happily on the hotshoe or comes with its own tethering clip. A quick cable change makes the Air compatible with numerous camera models.

WiFi transmission is not all the Air has in its bag of tricks. The app which controls the unit also gives you complete remote control of your camera. You can change shutter speed, aperture, iso, focus point, adjust focus (both manually and auto) ... and the list goes on ... and of course ... fire the shutter.

The easy to use app lets you take complete remote control of your camera.

There is also added support for HDR, time lapse, focus stacking and more. The range of the Air is claimed to be 45m (something that I haven't tested).

Happy shooting people.
