This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Mother of invention

Hi All

Last week was pretty special. In a totally spur-of-the-moment decision Michelle (wife) and I decided to travel to Albury to surprise our good friend (and fellow photographer) Mark for his birthday and housewarming.

A huge associated bonus was to get to stay with our good friends Ben and Laura and meet their little boy Archie for the first time (Laura was 6 weeks pregnant last time we caught up).

To break up the travel we decided to stay overnight in Melbourne on the way up (and back). As luck would have it, the apartment I booked (Melbourne Holiday Apartments on Flinders Wharf) had great views. Of course I had a camera with me, but I was trying to travel light, so the tripod stayed home. We didn’t get a perfect sunset, but it was pretty good. As the sun dropped below the horizon and the city lights started to take effect, the view got even more impressive.

I took some shots hand-held, but wanted to slow the shutter to get light trails from the moving cars…hmmm…

There is a saying that necessity is the mother of invention.

The pics below show the makeshift tripod I put together. It wasn’t great, but by firing the shutter using the self-timer, I managed to overcome the wobble.
