This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Beez kneez

Hello all.

As you know, I enjoy a challenge. I revisited the bumble bee problem...I still didn't manage to get THE shot I was after, but I learnt some more and got a few pretty cool images.

This time I went armed with my Godox AD600 studio strobe. My theory was that by using the strobe I could get a better aperture (for additional depth of field) and the pulse of the flash may help to stop the movement of the bee. I must have looked quite a sight...stalking bees around the shrubberies with a strobe in one hand and a camera in the other. Operating both at the same time was fairly tricky...I tried the strobe on a stand but it just didn't work due to the terrain etc.

Both ideas worked...kind of. I've come to realise that even at f13 the depth of field of the 100mm on the 5DIV is only a bee's dick...pardon the pun...a matter of millimetres (see the pick of the bee's bum).

And the duration of the flash pulse was still too long to freeze everything (and I think that the amount of ambient light was also affecting this).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy having a closer look at these little critters.

My step-son Harry and his partner Allira get married this weekend. Yay! Happy times and family get-together. Congratulations...I know it's going to be a special day.

I've been asked to shoot some video...so if things go according to plan there could be some moving pictures in the next blog.

Catch you then.
