Time flies

Well believe it or not, it is now 14 months since I left The Advocate.

 It has been… educational… and expensive.

Launching into your own business is a daunting experience. I knew it was going to be challenging. I expected things to take a while (everyone tells you that). It would have been totally unrealistic to imagine my calendar would magically fill with jobs and my contact book with clients.

It is very much a building process.

The actual photography side of things is no problem at all…after all it’s what I do…it’s what I am bloody good at.

It’s all the other stuff… the business stuff, the marketing, equipment, pricing, insurance … and the list just keeps going.

A year in and I am still finding occasions that I don’t have a particular piece of equipment needed for a specific shoot… or a piece of software… or I need a new hard drive to make sure all my clients’ work is triple backed up…just in case...or I need more marketing material. It is all investing in the future of my business…but the expense is now…not in the future.

Being a small business is tough.

I am very lucky to have people in the industry who have travelled this path previously that are willing to share their experiences and to give advice, help and encouragement.

I am also extremely lucky to have a wife that believes in me, believes in my vision for my business and works a “normal” job so we have food on the table.

This is not a whinge, it’s more of a time stamp, a place marker for where I am at now. I have been very fortunate to have made a living for a lot of years doing something that I love…and I believe that is a large part of why I am good at it…I love it.

 Social media has become integral to being seen. People need to be aware that I exist and every like, every share just increases the chances.
