This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Trio of tips

Hi all…once again I find myself behind schedule with my blogging…sorry.

It’s for a very good reason…I’ve been busy.

I have a pretty varied trio of topics for you this week.

Those of you who have followed my blogging will be familiar with this old faithful.

Canon bag.jpg

It’s a bag that was given to me by Canon in 2000 to mark the Sydney Olympics and has been in use since. It’s current role has been as my lighting bag…holding speedlights, grids, gels, diffusers, clamps and other assorted bits.

I’m sad to say it is no longer reliable…I noticed some fraying and a hole during a recent inspection. (pays to keep a close eye on your gear to make sure it’s up to the job).

You can’t have equipment you can’t rely on.

Thanks for being a loyal servant.

While on the subject of equipment…something pretty simple…but equally brilliant.

How many of you have had the misfortune to have had to try to carry multiple light stands along with your other gear? They invariably try to spin in opposite directions (almost like magnets of positive poles) making it almost impossible to get where you want to go without dropping at least one of them.

Here’s one answer…the Kupo Click Stand. Each individual stand has been designed to click into the next…making a “block” of stands to which a strap can be added. It’s super easy to carry 3 or 4 stands…hands-free!...no carry bag necessary. Brilliant simplicity.

This one is for those of you who have a Mavic. (probably applies to most drones…or more specifically, their controllers.

I recently went to get mine airborne and found I had an EMI error (electro-magnetic interference) on the controller. It didn’t matter where I went, I couldn’t clear the error.

After a bit of Googling, I discovered the answer. It turned out that the issue was my MagMod flash modifiers. As the name suggests, the basis for the system is the rare Earth magnets that attach the components together. I had been carrying both the Mavic and MagMod bits in the same bag. The magnets are powerful enough to upset the antennae of the Mavic controller. A bit of a wave of the magnet around the controller reset the error. Problem solved.

Until next time...
