This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Stick it where?

Hi all

We have all seen heaps of ‘What’s in my bag’ posts/blogs etc…well this one is a bit different. This is a ‘what bag do I put this in?’.

I have an overseas trip coming up which will involve lots of foot travel, train and public transport in pretty crowded environments. I have decided that none of my extensive bag collection is going to cut the mustard. So the search is on. I’m pretty sure it needs to be a backpack. Lugging gear around on one shoulder everyday for a month is a guaranteed recipe for a crook back.

The question is…which one? What are the requirements?

It needs to fit everything that is in the pic, plus a few everyday extras…like a water bottle, snacks, a rain jacket, phone etc. (the 15” Macbook rules out quite a few straight away).

It can’t be giant…it has to fit in carry-on and not be a nuisance in a crowded urban environment. It has to be comfortable…otherwise it defeats the purpose. Easy access to the gear is important. It needs to look good (but not so good that everyone wants to steal it) and be versatile and adaptable.

My preliminary research has come up with 3 so far.

Wandrd Duo 20 litre

Mindshift Backlight 26 litre (the 18 litre wont take the laptop)

Think Tank Urban Access 15

I think all of these are capable of doing the job. Each has its own set of advantages and small things that I don’t like. Like I have said in my previous bag blogs, I don’t think there is such a thing as the perfect bag as we all work differently and, (if you are anything like me) pack different equipment depending on the shoot.

Something that has occurred to me while writing this blog…another consideration should be its usefulness after the trip. I have been single-mindedly looking for a bag specifically for the trip…not very clever.

Before the last thought I was leaning toward the Urban Access (however, no one has any in stock and I don’t want to risk not having it in plenty of time for setup before the trip).

There are a few things about the Wandrd interior layout that I’m not convinced about…so it looks like the Backlight is the front runner (at the moment).

If anyone has any other contenders, please let me know.

Cheers
